Two Rivers Prison

   Em1884,D. Pedro IIstarted the construction ofLazaretto, openedtwo years later. The institution served as a temporary shelter for travelers arriving from Europe contaminated by thecholera. Like the passenger ships, the landscaped building was divided into first, second and third class pavilions. It also had a warehouse for cargo and luggage, a bacteriological laboratory and a pharmacy.[two]

   The first Penal Colony was created in 1903, next to the village oftwo rivers. Prisoners convicted ofcrimescommon.

In1940, the former hospital became the Cândido Mendes Penal Colony and received the prisoners who were in the Dois Rios Colony. This, in turn, began to receive political prisoners who were previously inFernando de Noronha- at the time, ceded as a military base to the United States, as part of the Brazilian effort toSecond World War. Among those arrested by the Estado Novo was the writerGraciliano Ramos, who recounted his passage in the autobiographical novelMemories of Prison.

    On1954, the Lazareto building was demolished by the governorCarlos Lacerda, and ordinary prisoners were transferred to the Dois Rios Colony, which was renamed Instituto Penal Cândido Mendes (IPCM). The prison continued in operation until 1994, when it was deactivated by the governor.Leonel Brizolaand imploded.

   Na1970s, criminals imprisoned in the IPCM created the Falange Vermelha, a criminal organization that would later become theRed Command. The founders were the drug dealersRogério LemgruberandWilliam da Silva Lima, the Professor, in addition toJose Carlos dos Reis Encina, the Escadinha.

    During the period many escapes happened causing fear to residents in several villages causing them to leave in several places, especially Parnaióca beach, where they were more constant hostages, the village was one of the largest villages on Ilha Grande, where today it has only a few residents, not more than 5 families.

    Famous escapes like the one on the ladder happened there, where the criminal fled by helicopter, in a cinematic escape. Also there was the famous madam satã, a criminal from Lapa who killed his victims only with a razor.
