Discovery of Ilha Grande

   Did you know that Ilha Grande is almost the same age as Brazil, and just two years after the arrival of the Portuguese on our coast, the Island was confused with Guanabara Bay on the 6th of January, the date of Santos Reis, hence the name Angra dos Reis.

Colonies on the Big Island

    On Ilha Grande there were two large farms, where one of them was sold to Dom Pedro, who used it as a farmhouse for quarantine to put the slaves who came from Europe with diseases such as leprosy, for quarantine and there they selected who would be executed and who could be used as a slave on the island or on the mainland.

The Pirates on the Big Island

   Ilha Grande was a refuge for pirates for a long time. wealth for Europe, it was also a route for those who went to La Prata, easy to open and with plenty of water to supply their boats 

Lazaretto

   The Lazareto was an important place of quarantine in Brazil, where immigrants had to undergo an evaluation, before they could disembark in the country, there they were evaluated and when necessary were treated for their illnesses that could pose a risk to the country. Later it also began to function as a prison for political prisoners.

Sardines Factory

   For a long time Ilha Grande housed a large number of sardine factories, where it was the biggest economic activity of the place, due to its predatory fishing, sardines became extinct and business was no longer sustainable, meaning that in 1992 the last unit in operation on Matariz beach was closed.

Two Rivers Prison

  The Candido Mendes Penal Institute in the village of Dois Rios, had great stories and countless characters who served time there, both for political crimes and for crimes in society, the escape of prisoners haunted villages, and from there emerged the red phalanx, known today as the red command.

The Tourism

  With the end of the prison, Ilha Grande became one of the most visited itineraries in Rio de Janeiro, with the high tourist demand and the great growth of enterprises in the place, the Island faces a great challenge, between preservation and sustainability.
